Russian owner of Vitesse-HOL sells its shares amid conflict in Ukraine

Russian oligarch Valeri Oyf, owner of Vitesse Arnhem, decided to sell his shares as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The announcement was made this Friday by the Dutch club, which competes in the Conference Europa League.

“Valeri Oyf has decided to sell his shares,” the team said in a statement, adding that the majority shareholder would immediately leave the board of directors.

“I am very sorry to say goodbye to Vitesse, but in the current situation I take this difficult decision in the interests of the club, the staff, the fans, the sponsors and the other parties present,” the Russian oligarch said in the text.

Like many Russian oligarchs close to power in Moscow, Oyf is under pressure after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and economic sanctions imposed by Europe and the United States in retaliation for that action.

According to the Dutch press, Oyf is a person close to Roman Abramovich, another of the Russian oligarchs facing UK sanctions and who led him to announce the sale of the Chelsea, current European champion. The process now is paralyzed by the action of the British authorities.

Vitesse are currently in the round of 16 of the Conference League. On Thursday, they lost 1-0 at home to Roma and, next week, seeks recovery in the Italian capital.
