Some leaders of the Formula 1 teams expressed their concern about the economic consequences of the war in Ukrainewhich has caused an energy crisis and price inflation, when equipment is subject to a spending ceiling.
“I think that is a real problem, because we are already seeing extremely high inflation”, declared this Friday the boss of Red Bull Christian Horner at a press conference during pre-season training in Bahrain.
“We already see the consequences in the prices of air freight transport”, he added.
“I consider that it is a very serious problem that we have to study and to which we have to respond, because this has an impact on employment and people’s living conditions. I think it is the duty of the regulator (of the championship) pronounce urgently to ensure that a solution is put into practice,” he insisted.
A fervent defender of the budget limit established in 2021 and later lowered, the McLaren Team Principal Andreas Seidl spoke in the same vein: “In recent weeks and months there have been new setbacks in terms of inflation, so I think it is important talk about it and see what to do”.
“I am open to discussing solutions and possible adjustments, as long as it remains within reasonable limits,” he added.
The decision to implement a limit on the expenses of the teams was made in 2020 in order to reduce the differences between the most powerful teams and the rest and thus increase competitiveness.
Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull were the main affected.
The cap was lowered from $145 million last year to $140 this season and will drop to $135 in 2023. (D)
