Coach Borodavko explained the scandal with Valieva at the 2022 Games by the desire to remove the Russian team
Yury Borodavko, head coach of the Russian cross-country skiing team, spoke about the doping scandal involving Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. His words are quoted by Gazeta.Ru.
“It was doubly unpleasant that it was pulled to the Olympics. I assume that a positive test was announced after Kamila won the team competition, wanting to pompously remove the Russian team, ”Borodavko explained the scandal. At the same time, he added that the athlete should not have taken a prohibited drug, and her doctors should be punished for this.
The doping scandal around Valieva broke out during the Olympics. Her test dated December 25, 2021 tested positive for the banned drug trimetazidine. The World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sought to remove the figure skater, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed Valieva to participate in the individual tournament at the Games. At the same time, the IOC postponed the award ceremony following the results of the team tournament, where Valieva became the winner as part of the Russian team.
Borodavko is the coach of Russian skier Alexander Bolshunov. At the 2022 Olympics, the athlete became a three-time champion: he has gold in the skiathlon, relay and marathon.
