Ukrainian midfielder Danylo Ignatenko, from Bordeauxsaid on Friday that he thought about joining the armed struggle to defend his country against Russian invasion.
“I sure thought about it. If that was going to help my country, I would have done it, but unfortunately this situation will last for a while and the best I can do is keep playing football.”
Ignatenko considered following the example of fellow countrymen Oleksandr Usyk, world boxing champion, and Yurit Vernydub, trainer of Moldova’s Sheriff Tiraspol, who returned to Ukraine to fight.
The player was seen crying at a Bordeaux training session two weeks ago, when the Russian invasion began. To support him, the club helped rescue part of his family in Ukraine, who now live with him in France.
Ignatenko will turn 25 next Sunday, the date on which he will fulfill a “boy’s dream”, playing in the Parc des Princes against the Paris Saint Germain.
