Deputy Zhurova called the change of sports citizenship by chess player Romanov a betrayal
State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova appreciated the decision of the Russian chess player Yevgeny Romanov to play for Norway. Her words are quoted by Metaratings.
The deputy called the chess player’s act a betrayal. “They won’t love you anyway. Does he think that everything will stop when he plays for Norway? This is double standards, after that he will not be considered Russian? Zhurova said. She considered that Romanov was in for a tough attitude, and he should not have left.
Romanov announced the decision to change sports citizenship on March 9. The 33-year-old grandmaster said that he is not very connected with Russian chess and has been cooperating with Norwegian coaches for a long time. According to him, he has been associated with Norwegian chess since 2013.
Romanov is ranked 335th in the FIDE rating. In 2013, he became the bronze medalist of the European Championship.
