The Russian invasion of Ukraine had a negative impact on business. Not only soldiers are killed in a brutal war, but also civilians. Western states impose further sanctions on the aggressor. They largely concern Russian oligarchs and their enormous fortune.
Abramowicz, who had located some of his businesses in the UK, faced the loss of his property. For several days it has been said that the local government intends to attack Russian interests. Abramovich did not hesitate and put up for sale his London real estate worth over 170 million pounds, as well as a club whose power he had been building since 2003.
Roman Abramovich will not sell Chelsea? Severe sanctions were imposed on the Russian oligarch
There was no shortage of people willing to buy “The Blues”. Mushin Bayrak, Tedd Boehley and Hansjörg Wyss or even Conor McGregor expressed their interest. However, the case is currently on hold. All because of another package of sanctions announced by the British government on Thursday.
– Abramovich has ties with Vladimir Putin, who is involved in the destabilization of Ukraine, undermines its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence – we read in the issued release.
Abramowicz’s assets in the UK were frozen. What’s more – the process of selling Chelsea has been suspended. The London club will change hands if Abramovich renounces the money he would have received.
Chelsea will operate under special rules
This makes the fate of the London club a great question mark. The Russian oligarch cannot use his foreign accounts, which may translate into problems with balancing the expenses of the “The Blues” team.
Chelsea will soon operate under a special license valid until May 31 this year. However, the club cannot sell players or tickets. Admission to matches played at Stamford Bridge will only be available to pass holders. Chelsea is also unable to recruit new players.
But that’s not all. The expenses that the club can spend on traveling for away matches are strictly defined. We are talking about the amount of 20 thousand. pounds. Therefore, it is not known whether the Londoners will be able to reach Lille, where they are to play a rematch in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League next Wednesday.
As if that was not enough, the ban also applies to the sale of club gadgets and t-shirts. If the club receives money, for example from TV rights, it will be frozen.
Earlier, the British media reported that the Evraz PLC company, in which Abramovich had a stake until recently, could participate in the production of Russian tanks. You can read more about this case.
