Bayern Munich’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski broke his sponsorship deal with the Chinese company Huaweiaccused by media outlets of collaborating with Russia in a context of war with Ukraine, accusations that the company calls “fake news”.
“We took the decision today to end the marketing cooperation between Robert Lewandowski and the Huawei brand. As a result, all promotional activities have been suspended on our part,” said the player’s agent, Tomasz Zawislak, in a statement sent to AFP, without stating the reason for the break.
According to Polish media, this decision is related to an article published in the British newspaper Daily Mail in which Huawei is accused of having helped Russia and improve the security of its internet in the face of pro-Ukraine hacker attacks. The newspaper bases its accusations on a report posted on a Chinese website that was immediately taken offline.
Huawei confirmed in a brief statement the breach of contract with Lewandowski.
“Huawei CBG Poland regrets the end of its collaboration with Robert Lewandowski. We thank you for your cooperation over several years and wish you much success in the future,” the company said in an email sent to AFP.
Huawei’s Polish subsidiary also claimed that the Daily Mail’s accusations are “fake news” and that the information published by the newspaper “is not true”.
On the first Sunday after the start of the Russian attacks, Lewandowski wore the captain’s armband with the colors of the Ukrainian flag in Bayern Munich’s 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
“The world cannot accept what is happening. I hope the whole world supports Ukraine,” said the striker.
