The preparation work for the individual time trials (CRI) bears fruit for the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers). The times reflected this Monday in the first stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico placed him in 20th place, 47 seconds behind his teammate Filippo Ganna, something that the Locomotive considers “a first step” to fight for the Giro d’Italiain May.
“It is a time trial that does not go with my characteristics, but we try to do the best”, said Carapaz at the close of the first stage of the “Race of the Two Seas”, in which he occupied the rank 20.
The Ecuadorian said to be “motivated” after completing the first dayin a modality in which he premiered his CRI national title, obtained in February, in Quito.
“This is the first step we have come to take,” said the Carchenseconfirmed by Ineos to fight the Giro d’Italia, a title he already won in 2019.

Outside of Ganna, world champion CRI, Carapaz’s fight focuses on rivals such as the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) and Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates), who present themselves as main candidates for the title of the Tirreno-Adriatico and with whom Carapaz lost 29 and 36 seconds, respectively.
The Ecuadorian recognized the candidacies for the title of Pogacar and Evenepoel, but a fight is not ruled out in the following days.
“They are the top favorites, but we must take into account. There is a week ahead and we are going to try to do our best, always, ”she indicated.
Ineos will have to seek to prevail against powerful squads like Jumbo-Visma, who scored a hat-trick in the first stage of Paris-Nice and who arrives with the Danish Jonas Vingegaard in the leadwhom Carchense led by six seconds in the ITT.
Another candidate is the Colombian Miguel Ángel López (Astana Qazaqstan), with whom the Locomotive lost 5 seconds this day.
“We come with the mentality of winning, at Ineos we consider that. We have a team strong enough to launch the attack or be able to defend”, Carapaz pointed out.
The Tirreno-Adriatico will run a total of seven stages and it will continue this Tuesday in a 219-kilometre day, starting in Camaiore and arriving in Sovicille, a route with few difficulties, which would leave a close to the sprint.
The Queen stage will be on Saturday with closure in Carpegna, a day that will have two climbs to Monte Carpegna of 6 kilometers at 10%. (D)
