Dayana Yastremska, after the WTA final in Lyon: All this week I haven’t been fighting for myself. But also for my country | Other Sports | sports

The most difficult week for the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, who fled the Russian invasion of her country and settled with her younger sister in France, ended without a trophy after losing the final of the Lyon tournament that was won by the Chinese Shuai Zhang.

“All this week I have not been fighting for myself. But also for my country,” said the Odessa player with the Ukrainian flag around her neck after losing to Zhang. “I will give all my prize money to my nation,” she added excitedly.

“They are so strong, with such incredible spirit,” Yastremska told Ukrainian citizens fighting in her country.

The player from Odesa could not complete the week with a title. She missed out on victory in Lyon against the eighth seed, in a match resolved in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).

The eastern one knew how to react to Yastremska’s initial dominance and closed the victory after one hour and 48 minutes. It is the third title for Zhang. She adds Lyon to Guanzhou in 2017 and Guangzhou in 2013. The Ukrainian was looking for the fourth success of her career, the first since 2018. (D)
