State Duma deputy and Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova gave a forecast in connection with the decision in the doping case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. Her words are reported by Sport24.
“Let’s hope that politics will not affect Valieva’s case in any way. There are a lot of procedural issues, not political ones, so logically they should not be mixed, ”she said. Zhurova expressed confidence that the lawyers would work to the fullest and the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKR) would not allow the case to become political in nature.
Zhurova noted that if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) politicize the case on a national basis, the final decision is made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). “In court, we won many cases, despite political orders. I think there should be no problems here if innocence is proven, ”she said.
Valieva failed to keep the lead after the short program and took fourth place in the individual figure skater tournament at the Beijing Games. A doping scandal broke out around her during the Olympics. Her test dated December 25, 2021 tested positive for the banned drug trimetazidine. WADA and the IOC sought to remove the 15-year-old figure skater, but CAS allowed Valieva to participate in the individual tournament at the Games. At the same time, the IOC postponed the award ceremony following the results of the team tournament, where Valieva became the winner as part of the Russian team.
