Davis Cup: Spain, one step away from the finals | Other Sports | sports

Spain achieved its second point this Friday in the qualifying round for the Davis Cup final phase against Romania in Marbella, thanks to the display of talent by Carlos Alcaraz in his debut in the competition against the Romanian Marius Copil, who, however, did not He made it easy for him (6-4 and 6-3).

The first set of Alcaraz’s debut, number 19 in the world ranking, with the Spanish team’s jersey was an accumulation of exchange of blows, with two safe tennis players in their serve and refused to give in a scenario of maximum equality from the beginning.

Thus, volleys followed one another, a two-handed backhand, winning forehands from Alcaraz and powerful serves and good returns from Marous Copil, who, with 31 years and more experience, caused certain errors in the Spaniard (2-2).

However, the privileged arm of the Spanish tennis player appeared with spikes of the highest level and, with a crosscourt backhand that raised the entire central court of the Puente Romano club in Marbella, managed to put Spain 3-2, although there was no way to break the serve to Copil and ended up going 4-4.

Sergi Bruguera, captain of Spain in the Davis Cup, asked him to calm down from his seat, but Alcaraz, 18 years old and number 19 in the world, is a kid who defies risk and has too many resources not to use them.

A blank game endorsed Copil for the 5-4 and, when the breakdid not fail and the Romanian gave up for 6-4 in a closing of the first set that ended with the veteran protesting to the chair umpire, for a ball from Alcaraz to the line that only he saw outside.

Soon the personality of a champion came out, who always takes the risk without caring to pay the toll of an unforced error, and Alcaraz went from 1-1 to 4-1 in the second set, where he broke the equality of the match.

In this context, the tennis player from El Palmar, who has plenty of physique to reach almost unattainable balls, endured an eternal sixth game, but Copil did better to add some spice to the clash (5-3).

This lost game spurred on Alcaraz, who was reactivated and did not forgive in the final point after overcoming a 30-40, while Copil could not do more than accept a defeat that leaves the Spanish Navy with a 2-0 and one point to finish off their classification for the final phase of the Davis Cup on Saturday.
