2006 Paralympic champion Irina Polyakova reacted to the suspension of Russian athletes from competition at the 2022 Games in Beijing. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
The athlete said that the competition was supposed to unite people, and stressed that Russian athletes spent a lot of time and effort on preparation. “It’s a shame for the guys. It has never happened before that this has been done to athletes. I want – I will allow, I want – I will not let. Are they to blame?” she added.
Earlier on March 3, the International Paralympic Committee refused to allow Russian athletes to compete at the 2022 Games. The decision was changed due to the fact that the national committees opposed the participation of Russia in the competition. Russia called the decision illegal.
Games will be held from 4 to 12 March. 71 athletes from Russia were supposed to take part in the competition.
