The International Paralympic Committee changed its mind and refused to allow Russian athletes to compete at the 2022 Games in Beijing. This was reported on the website of the organization.
The president of the organization, Andrew Parsons, said the decision was changed due to the fact that the national committees opposed Russia’s participation in the competition. It is noted that athletes from all over the world threatened to withdraw from the competition. Also, athletes from Belarus will not be able to take part in the Paralympics.
Parsons expressed regret over what had happened. In his opinion, the Paralympians are not to blame for the situation, but the governments of the countries.
On March 2, the International Paralympic Committee allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in a neutral status. Athlete awards were not to be counted in the unofficial Paralympic medal standings.
Games will be held from 4 to 12 March. Competitions will be held in three clusters at once – Beijing, Zhangjiakou and Yanqing.
