Amid tensions surrounding the war between Russia and Ukraine, Alonso and seven other players on the team were released to leave the country after suspension of their contract.
“FC Krasnodar, at the request of the players, has suspended the contracts of the following athletes: Wanderson Maciel, Caio, Eric Bootheim, Christian Ramirez, Junior Alonso, John Cordoba, Victor Klasson and Remy Cabella. The players have left the club’s headquarters and will train on their own, while their contracts will be valid.”
Former captain of Galo, the Paraguayan was sold in January 2022, for the amount of 8.5 million dollars. The bond with the Russian club is valid until mid-2025.
Excited about a possible return, some Atlético fans even took to social media with a campaign for Alonso to return, but the club has not commented on the matter.
This Sunday, Atlético-MG, leader of the Campeonato Mineiro, faces rival Cruzeiro, at 18h (GMT), at Mineirão, in a classic valid for the 9th round of the state.
