The English Premier League announced this Wednesday a series of measures to show its support for Ukrainevictim of a Russian invasion, like the bracelets with the colors blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, which will be carried by the captains of the 20 teams.
“The Premier League and its clubs wholeheartedly condemn Russia’s actions and will show their support for the Ukrainian people during the weekend’s matches,” reads the Premier League statement.
“We call for the return of peace and our thoughts are with those who are being affected,” the text adds.
During the 28th date, which will be played from March 5 to 7, the captains of all the clubs will have an armband with the colors of Ukraine.
What’s more, “a moment of reflection and solidarity”, probably in the form of a minute of silence or applause, will take place before kick-off.
The giant screens of the ten stadiums that will host the matches will show the message “football is united”, on a blue and yellow background, while the Premier League logo already shows the colors of the Eastern European country on its social networks.
Clubs, players and fans did not wait for the Premier League’s position to show their solidarity before the weekend.
The players of Man Utd and of watford gathered in the central circle behind a banner with the word Peace written in six languages, one of them Russian, before the start of their match.
During the match between Brighton and Aston-Villathe side of the ‘Villains’, Matty Cashrecently nationalized Pole, paid tribute to his teammate Tomasz Kedziorawho plays for Dynamo Kiev, displaying the message ‘Tomasz Kedziora + his family, stay strong my brother”, next to the drawing of a heart.
This gesture earned the player a yellow card because he completely removed his shirt, but the Premier League has given instructions so that players are not penalized for the same.
The League Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea last Sunday, it was also preceded by a minute of applause, after the two captains entered the pitch wearing wreaths in the colors of Ukraine. (D)
