The Russian tennis player lost to the Ukrainian woman who refused to play with her

Russian Anastasia Potapova lost to the representative of Ukraine Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament in Monterrey, Mexico. This is reported by the correspondent of “Lenta.ru”.

The match took place on Wednesday, March 2, and ended with the victory of the Ukrainian in two sets – 6:2, 6:1. The game lasted 1 hour and 4 minutes. In the second round of the competition, Svitolina will face Bulgarian tennis player Victoria Tomova.

On Monday, February 28, Svitolina announced her refusal to play with Potapova and withdrew from the tournament. The next day, the Ukrainian woman changed her mind, agreeing to play against the Russian woman if she performed as a neutral athlete.

On March 1, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) temporarily suspended Russia and Belarus from participating in competitions under its auspices. The sanction will not affect individual Russian and Belarusian athletes who compete in singles.
