André Jardine won his first victory ahead of Atlético San Luis this Monday, beating Monterrey 2-0 away from home. The opponent is the current champion of the Concacaf Champions League and played in the last edition of the Club World Cup, which also featured Palmeiras.
To beat one of the strongest teams in the country, Jardine gave up some of the principles that shape his game model. With the triumph, the team left the bottom of the Mexican Championship and gained three positions in the table, approaching the classification zone for the playoffs.
“We don’t keep the ball that much, it’s true. Monterrey has a lot of quality, they are the most expensive squad in the league, they come from titles, from the World Cup… They pressured us especially at the beginning. Our team defended very well and, with a quick transition, we managed to have some control of the game and a huge victory at their house. It was very special. In addition to being my first in the league, against a great opponent, the victory gives everyone confidence”, said the coach.
In the next round, San Luis will face Chivas, one of the most traditional clubs in Mexico. Despite the greatness, the opponent comes from three consecutive defeats.
“It will be very tough. Chivas is a team that has a lot of possession, plays close, is very technical. They have been pressured by the latest results and we will have to look for alternatives to score points”, projected Jardine.
The coach also commented on the level of Mexican football, comparing the national league with the Brazilian one. Since taking over San Luis, Jardine has had three “quarries”: Tigres, Toluca and Monterrey.
“Despite the short time, I have no doubt that the top three or four teams in Mexico would fight for the top positions in Brazil. The level is very high, with great players and structured clubs. I am very happy to be a part of it.”
