The International World Games Association (IWGA) and the Executive Council of the Birmingham 2022 Organizing Committee agreed on Tuesday, “in light of the current circumstances, to veto Russian and Belarusian athletes and managers” in the edition that will be held in that English city from July 7 to 17.
At the same time, the IWGA pledged to “do everything possible to help Ukrainian athletes to participate in the Games.” This decision, motivated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, is in line with the recent recommendation of the International Olympic Committee, he explains.
“The members of the Executive Committee of the IWGA are dismayed by the war in Ukraine and its impact on innocent athletes who have been training for the World Games for a long time,” says the body, which agreed to keep this situation “under close review”.
The IWGA Executive Committee will meet next Friday and review the many practical implications of this decision. (D)
