FIFA and Uefa decide to suspend Russia from their competitions

FIFA and UEFA announced on Monday the suspension of Russian teams from their competitions, in view of the country’s attacks in Ukraine. In this way, Russia will not be able to participate in the Qualifiers for the World Cup and is out of the World Cup in Qatar, as well as Russian teams will be excluded from the tournaments organized by the entity: Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

The topic was being discussed internally and the federations were counting on public pressure for the Russian Federation to be suspended. Earlier, the world union of professional players, FIFPro, released an official statement calling for the suspension.

The decision also results in the exclusion of the Russian women’s team from the Euro Cup, in July, in England, where they would have to face Holland, Sweden and Switzerland during the group stage.

Another affected will be Spartak Moscow, which would play in the round of 16 of the Europa League, against RB Leipzig. The federations have not yet disclosed what will be done following the championships.

Shortly after having communicated the decision, UEFA also announced the end of the partnership with Gazproma Russian energy company and natural gas exporter.

“Following the initial decisions taken by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which provided for the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA jointly decided today that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, , will be suspended from participation in all FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.

These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.

Football is fully united here and in complete solidarity with all affected people in Ukraine. Both presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and quickly so that football can once again be a vector of unity and peace between peoples.”
