Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Sports Committee Sergei Burlakov reassured Russian athletes and fans amid sanctions. He spoke about this in an interview with a correspondent for Lenta.ru.
Burlakov urged athletes and fans to be patient. “Continuing to train with special diligence is the only possible path for every athlete,” he said.
The deputy noted that Russian athletes have already faced sanctions, but the crisis was overcome. “Remember 2016. The whole country was in shock due to the suspension of the Russian Paralympic team. We survived it with dignity,” he said. Burlakov recalled that at that time alternative domestic competitions were held in the country, which pleased both athletes and fans. He also stressed that everyone should remember that there is always a way out.
Over the past few days, Russia has been deprived of the Champions League final, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the World Cup in cross-country skiing and the world series in synchronized swimming and diving. In some sports, Russians will not be able to compete under the flag and anthem. The decisions were taken against the backdrop of Russia’s special military operation in the Donbass.
