22 penalties in the English League Cup final. Only the goalkeeper made a mistake

During Liverpool’s national anthem, which sounded special at the time, “You’ll never walk alone”, Chelsea fans held Ukrainian flags in the air.

Lots of excitement and three unrecognized goals

For not only 90 minutes, but even 120 minutes, there were no goals at Wembley. Although there was no shortage of opportunities on both sides. In the first half, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy showed an absolutely brilliant double intervention, first deflecting the ball after a strong shot from a long distance by Naby Keita, and then miraculously saved a close-range shot by Sadio Mane.

The second part of the game started with a great chance by Mason Mount, in which the Chelsea midfielder only hit the post. Several minutes later, he found himself in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. The Egyptian wanted to beat Mendy with a sneak, but he hit it lightly enough that the defenders of “The Blues” kicked the ball.

In the 67th minute he enjoyed the goal for a long time, after Joel Matip hit the net after a well-played free kick. Following VAR’s intervention, however, the referee rightly concluded that Virgil Van Dijk was in the offside position by blocking Chelsea defender Reece James and canceling the goal.

Tuchel’s failed risk. Kepa’s nightmare

Chelsea players scored twice in extra time. First, Romelu Lukaku took advantage of the one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, but he was slightly offside. In the second part of the extra time the Liverpool goalkeeper was defeated by Kai Havertz, but he too was placed behind the last defender’s line at the time of the pass.

Correct goals were missing for 120 minutes, so the penalty kicks were decisive for the victory. And these players of both teams were so perfect that the goalkeepers had to approach the ball. CaoimhĂn Kelleher from Liverpool also hit perfectly, but the Spaniard, who was only put on penalties, not only failed to save any of the eleven himself, and on his own attempt he sent the ball high into the Wembley stands. In this way, Liverpool won the penalty shootout against Chelsea 11:10 and reached for the Carabao Cup, the League Cup.
