The International Ski Federation () made and announced on Friday a decision on the participation of Russians in their international competitions. Competitors can appear on them representing their country, but there will be no flags or playing the national anthem of Russia.
The FIS provides Ukraine with support. “We will provide immediate support”
“The Russians will be able to compete under their own name and for their country,” we read in the statement. Later in the communiqué, the FIS emphasizes that there will be no Russian flag and anthem at official ceremonies, such as decoration ceremonies. Instead, the flag and the anthem of the FIS will appear. The full version of the message can be read (under “update”).
Now the FIS has turned to themselves to help. “In these extremely difficult times, the FIS fully supports our Ukrainian athletes and their teams. The safety and well-being of our athletes are always of the utmost importance to the FIS,” we read at the beginning of the World Federation’s statements.
“Today we informed the Ukrainian Ski Federation that the FIS will provide immediate financial, logistical and technical support to our Ukrainian athletes and their staffs until they can safely return home” – assured the world skiing authorities on Saturday.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine and we hope that this conflict will be ended immediately,” it was noted at the end of the statement.
The aggression against Ukraine has continued since Thursday morning. Fighting with the invader is underway throughout almost the entire territory of the Ukrainian state, and Russian bombs are falling not only on military but also civilian targets. Sports games are far from being played, but due to the war in Ukraine, subsequent world and national federations are forced to make decisions regarding subsequent sports events.
