Dynamo Riga has announced its withdrawal from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). This was reported on the club’s website.
The team said that the exit from the KHL expresses a clear position of the leadership. “In the context of the military and humanitarian crisis, we do not see an opportunity for cooperation with the league,” they stressed.
Dynamo Riga has been playing in the KHL since the league was founded in 2008. In the current draw, the team finished last in the Western Conference and did not qualify for the playoffs.
Before that, another foreign club withdrew from the Gagarin Cup. Finnish “Jokerit” notified the leadership of the league that he would not participate in the playoffs.
Against the background of the military operation conducted by Russia in the Donbass, domestic athletes have lost the opportunity to compete under their own flag in cross-country skiing and biathlon, to play on home fields in European football competitions and qualifying for the World Cup.
