Marcelo “Crazy” Bielsa came to an end at Leeds United. This Sunday morning, the club announced the termination of the coach’s contract, who is considered by many to be the main responsible for the team’s return to the First Division.
At the helm of the team for nearly four years, the decision came after Leeds conceded 17 goals in their last four Premier League matches and scored just two.
“This was the most difficult decision I had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, given all the success Marcelo has had at the club,” said chairman Andrea Radrizzani.
“I have to act in the best interest of the club and I believe a change is needed now to secure our status in the Premier League. Recent results and performance have not met our expectations.”
The 66-year-old Argentinian Bielsa took over the reins of the club in June 2018. In his second season he won the Sky Bet Championship title, winning the division that resulted in promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.
Last season, Leeds finished ninth, securing the highest score by a newly promoted team since the 2000/01 season. However, in a different scenario, the team recorded only five wins this year in the competition, in addition to having the worst defense.
