Lionel Messi has the doors open to sign for Inter Miami, David Beckham’s team

Inter Miami, a team co-owned by David Beckham, remains optimistic that it can attract Argentine star Lionel Messi to MLS when he leaves Paris Saint-Germain, another of the franchise owners said.

“Leo Messi is still one of the best players in the world, his skills have not diminished,” Jorge Mas, co-owner and CEO of Inter, told the Miami Herald newspaper.

“I think, and David (Beckham) has a relationship with him, that if he leaves PSG, the moment he leaves, we would love for Lionel Messi to be an Inter Miami player and part of our community. It can happen? We will push. I am an optimist at heart. Can I see that happening? It’s a possibility,” Mas said.

In his turn, Beckham was more cautious when speaking about that possibility and stressed that his great goal is for Inter Miami to become a winning team in the new season of the North American league, which opens on Saturday.

“I’ve always said that I want the best players to be at our club and play in our shirt,” he said. “Unfortunately, sometimes it can be a bad thing. But most of the time it’s a good thing.”

“In the end it’s about winning, whether it’s with the youngsters or with stars. Our fans will be happy if we have stars in the team, but they will be even happier if they see young players passing through our academy and lifting the MLS Cup.”

Inter Miami, which debuted in the MLS in 2020, has made some of the most famous signings in recent years in the league, especially those of the Argentine Gonzalo Higuaín and the French Blaise Matuidi.

Beckham’s team, however, has not yet managed to qualify for the playoffs and has just ruled out Matuidi for this campaign, whose signing cost him an MLS fine for breach of salary regulations.

In turn, Inter is the team that has been most closely related to a possible arrival in the MLS of Lionel Messi, 34 years old.

Before signing his current contract with Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, for a duration of two seasons and an optional one, Messi expressed his hope of playing in the United States in the future. (D)
