Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged on Friday that his club, owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, is “especially disturbed” by the situation since Thursday in Ukraine due to Russia’s attack.
British authorities have announced several sanctions against Russian interests and a Labor MP has directly questioned the government over the case of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea’s multi-billionaire owner.
“We can’t pretend it’s not a problem. The situation in general, for me and my coaching staff, for everyone in Cobham (the club’s training centre), for the players, is horrible,” Tuchel told reporters.
“Nobody expected this. It’s very unrealistic, as I said, it disturbs our mood, it disturbs our excitement ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final (against Liverpool),” he added.
Tuchel declined to comment further on the Abramovich case. “There are so many uncertainties around the situation at our club and the situation in the UK … that it would make no sense for me to comment on it,” he said, asking to be able “to focus on sport and not politics.”
The German coach showed solidarity with the people who are suffering from the situation in Ukraine. “Our best wishes, regards and thoughts are obviously with them, which is absolutely the most important thing.”
On Thursday, Russia launched an offensive to invade Ukraine and fighting continued as far as the capital Kiev on Friday.
