Russian skiers banned from performing under the country’s flag

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has banned Russian athletes from participating in international competitions under the national flag. This was reported on the website of the organization.

The anthem of Russia was also banned. It is noted that the athletes will continue to compete under their own name and with the name of the country, but at all official events, including award ceremonies, the FIS flag and anthem will be used.

Earlier it became known that the FIS deprived Russia of the right to host the remaining stages of the World Cup in cross-country skiing in the 2021/2022 season. The World Cup final was to be held in Tyumen from 18 to 22 March. The decision was made against the background of the military operation of the Russian Armed Forces on the territory of Ukraine.

On February 25, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called on sports federations to cancel or reschedule competitions from Russia and Belarus. According to the statement of the organization, the countries violated the Olympic truce. The IOC does not plan any events on their territory and gives absolute priority to the safety of athletes. The executive committee of the organization also recommended that sports federations not fly flags and not include the anthems of Russia and Belarus in all competitions.
