The International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced its decision to change the venue of the 44th Chess Olympiadwho had been appointed to Moscowafter the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and is looking for a new city to host the event that will take place between July 26 and August 8.
Gathered urgently after the Russian military incursion into Ukraine that began this Thursday, the FIDE announced what it qualifies in a “difficult” decision statementdue to “the rapidly deteriorating geopolitical situation”.
In this way, all competitions are moved from Russia and FIDE is currently working to find an alternative venue. The Chess Olympiad is disputed by 190 countries from all over the world who compete for two weeks, and in the 2022 edition the novelty of including the first Olympiad for people with disabilities is presented.
FIDE also announced that the 93rd Congress of the Federation, which was to be held together with the Chess Olympiad, will be moved from Russia, and in which an electoral procedure will be held with the conclusion of the first term of its current president, the Russian Arkady Dvorkovich, in office since September 2018.
