Achieved 99% of the direct pass to the Qatar World Cup by the absolute national team, the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) slipped its “intention to renew” the contract of coach Gustavo Alfaro, with a view to the next tie for the Cup FIFA World Cup 2026, as revealed on Wednesday by the entity’s vice president, Carlos Manzur.
In talk with the radio program machsports, Manzur revealed: “Today we intend to renew Gustavo Alfaro. It is very pleasant to work with him and his coaching staff”.
The 59-year-old Argentine coach, hired in September 2020 for the start of the South American pre-world championship for Qatar-2022, has a current agreement with the FEF until the end of this tie. If the National Team qualifies for Qatar-2022, the link is automatically extended until the end of the World Cup (Sunday, December 18).
His campaign at the head of the Tri is summed up in seven wins, four draws and five losses, which give him 25 points, with 25 goals for and 15 against, for a goal difference of 10. In addition, he scored wins in official friendlies over Bolivia and Mexico, and a draw against El Salvador.
Under his command, the national team has remained in the direct qualifying zone for much of the South American World Cup, behind Brazil and Argentina. A draw with Paraguay in Ciudad del Este, on March 24, or with Lionel Messi’s Albiceleste, on the 29th in Guayaquil, certify the Ecuadorians’ ticket to Qatar.
To achieve the goal, just It remains that these last two dates of the calendar elapse so that Ecuador is not only in the playoffs, but also has a direct ticket to the FIFA World Cup, even without getting a single more point, this due to its average goal (+ 10), a situation that could most likely be clarified on matchday 17.
Alfaro arrived in the country on Sunday, September 6, 2020, together with his coaching staff, assistants Carlos González and Claudio Cristofanelli; physical trainers Sergio Chiarelli and Pedro Arbelaiz, and video analyst Alejandro Monograsso.
His debut on the coaching bench for Ecuador took place on October 8 against Argentina, at the La Bombonera stadium (Buenos Aires), on the first day of the qualifying round for Qatar. (D)
