she was the favorite of the match, although she played with a difficult opponent – Tours VB is the current leader of the French league and a solid European team. It was not without problems, but the Poles won the game and are close to the club’s first entry to the finals.
Horror movie with a happy ending. PGE Skra Bełchatów better than Tours VB in the CEV Cup
The game started with an even first set, but they turned out to be better in it – they won 26:24 and took the lead in sets. Later, however, PGE Skra gained control and gained an advantage – first they evened the game, winning the second game 25:22, and then won the third to 20.
It seemed that the players of Slobodan Kovac had the game under control, but in the fourth set the advantage was quickly gained by the French and Tours won it 25:22. It meant a tie-break. In it, the hosts were already leading 6: 3, but they lost a big advantage and the game was more even (9: 8). Ultimately, the team from Bełchatów won 15:13 in the fifth set and 3: 2 in the entire match.
What must happen for PGE Skra to advance to the finals? Winning the best scenario
Such a result of the match means that PGE Skra has made a big step towards reaching the final. However, with five sets in Bełchatów, she should win away from home in the last game of this season. In that case, whether it was a win for three points (3: 0, 3: 1) or two (3: 2), promotion would be certain.
In the event of a defeat with Tours, the situation is different: if the French defeat PGE Skra in three or four sets, the Poles will be eliminated from the tournament. If they win 3: 2, both teams will face the so-called “golden set” and the winner will enter the finals. The rematch is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2 at 20:00.
Bełchatów as the first Polish winner of the CEV Cup? In the final, they would break the decade of Poles’ absence
PGE Skra has already matched the club’s best result in the history of the CEV Cup. In 2004, she also made it to the semi-finals. Then, however, she lost twice to the Russian Guberynia Nizhny Novgorod and was eliminated. Now, in the event of a promotion to the finals, it would be the first such success of the Polish club in this competition in ten years and equal the best result in the history of Polish volleyball.
In the 2011/2012 season she did it, a year earlier by ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle, and in the 1977/1978 season by AZS Olsztyn. All these teams, however, lost their finals. Therefore, PGE Skra Bełchatów has a chance to become the first Polish winner of the CEV Cup.
A gesture of support for PGE Skra for Ukraine after the Russian invasion. The first of its kind in Poland
“Hands off Ukraine” – This is the first such gesture of support in Polish sport after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. During the meeting, the Ukrainian flag was displayed on the bands between the stands, and PGE Skra prepared a special post in social media. “We will be with Ukraine at this difficult moment and we want to say out loud: Ukraine has not died yet!” – wrote the club.
