the dutch Max Verstappen considered this Thursday “very unfair” the decision of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to dismiss Australian Michael Masi from his role as Formula 1 race director after his controversial decisionswhich allowed the pilot to win the last Grand Prix.
“For me it is very unfair what happened to Michael, they really abandoned him”, said the Red Bull rider at a press conference during pre-season testing in Montmeló, near Barcelona. “It wasn’t the right thing to do,” he continued.
In the middle of this month, Michael Masi has been sacked from his role as F1 race director for his management of the 2021 Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi.
“People talk a lot about what was decided in Abu Dhabi, but can you imagine a referee from any other sport having the coach or his equivalent yelling in his ear all the time?”, asked the pilot, alluding to the communications between the boss of the teams and the director of the race.
“I think the fact that F1 allowed this, that members of a team could talk to him to make decisions, (was) a mistake,” Verstappen said.
“Michael had to make the decisions alone (…) Now, to be fired like this, for me it is unacceptable”, the Dutchman abounded.
“Michael was all the time trying to protect us, that’s what we ask (of) a race director”, defended, for his part, the Spanish Fernando Alonso, from Alpine, double world champion in 2005 and 2006. (D)
