“No to war”: Russian Dynamo Moscow striker Fedor Smolov expressed this Thursday in Instagram his opposition to the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army, becoming the first international player of the Sbornaïa in doing it.
His concise message, ‘No to war’, along with a black background, is accompanied by a Ukrainian flag and a broken heart.
The 32-year-old footballer, present in the last three calls for the Russian team, is the first Russian international to publicly position himself on the issue.
His reaction came a few hours after the start of the Russian army’s air and ground attack on Ukraine.
On Wednesday night, Benfica’s Ukrainian international striker Roman Yaremchuk displayed a shirt with the Ukrainian shield, while celebrating his goal against Ajax Amsterdam in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 (2-2).
“I am Ukrainian and proud of it”, commented the player in Instagram overnight.
“It is our country, our history, our people and our borders. I would like to thank everyone who defends us for their bravery. Glory to Ukraine,” he wrote. (D)
