The president of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, said on Thursday he was “concerned” by the “tragic and disturbing” situation in Ukraine following the Russian attack and military intervention, without specifically addressing the issue of the next departures scheduled on Russian territory.
“I was shocked by what I saw. I am concerned about this situation. FIFA condemns Russia’s use of force. Violence is never a solution. We ask all actors to restore peace through constructive dialogue,” said the official. Italian-Swiss leader at a press conference.
Russia should host Poland on March 24 in the semi-final of this year’s World Cup play-off and, if they win, they will play as hosts again on March 29 against Sweden or the Czech Republic, in the play-off final, decisive to guarantee a vacancy in world Cup.
However, this Thursday, the Polish, Swedish and Czech federations spoke out against the Russian invasion. In addition, the three nations asked Uefa not to host the games in Russia, citing a “lack of security”.
