The European Football Confederation “strongly condemns the Russian military invasion” in Ukraine – announced on Thursday, the eve of an extraordinary meeting of its executive committee, in which a decision could be made on the change of the venue of the Champions League final. The event is scheduled for May 28 in St. Petersburg.

The committee meets at 10 am this Friday to study, in particular, the fate of the Champions League final.
Its members may decide to change the order of the calendar for the coming months and even impose sanctions against Moscow, following the line adopted by some countries.
At the top of the pyramid of sporting events in Russia is the Champions League final on May 28 in St. Petersburg, whose stadium is named after gas giant Gazprom. The company has been one of UEFA’s main sponsors since 2012.
“No decision has been taken” by UEFA at the moment, but the European confederation “works with different options” to relocate the match, a source close to AFP told AFP.
