Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev will become the first racket of the world. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
On February 24, Medvedev, playing at a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, defeated Spaniard Pablo Andujar. The Russian won with a score of 6:1, 6:2 and made it to the quarterfinals. Also on February 24, the current leader of the rating of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Novak Djokovic lost at the ATP-500 category tournament in Dubai. The Serb lost to the Czech Jiri Vesela with a score of 4:6, 6:7 (4:7).
Thus, Medvedev scored 8525 points and overtook Djokovic. The Serbian lost 410 points due to an early defeat in Dubai and now has 8465 points. The updated rating will be available on February 28.
Medvedev became the first Russian tennis player in more than 20 years to top the ATP rankings. The last time Marat Safin succeeded in this was in April 2001. Earlier in 1999, the first racket of the world was Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
Medvedev became the 27th best tennis player in history. The record holder for the longest stay on the first line of the ATP rankings is Djokovic, who was in the lead for 361 weeks.
