The State Duma responded to the call of the British Foreign Office to boycott the Champions League final in Russia

State Duma deputy Sergei Burlakov said that sport should be out of politics. So he responded to the call of British Foreign Minister Liz Truss to English clubs to boycott the Champions League final in St. Petersburg, RIA Novosti reports.

“It seems to me that Mrs. Liz Truss is rushing things a bit, as far as I know, English clubs are not yet in the Champions League final,” Burlakov said. He also noted that political decisions should not reflect on athletes.

Truss made the announcement on February 23. “Personally, I would not want to participate in a football match in St. Petersburg, given what the regime is doing [президента России Владимира] Putin,” she said.

In the Champions League of the current season, matches of the 1/8 finals are held. Four English teams remained in the fight for the title: Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. The final of the tournament should take place on May 28 in St. Petersburg.
