Ajax will pay a sum of €7.85 million (approximately R$45.05 million) to the family of former player Abdelhak Nouri, in relation to “inappropriate treatment”. The amount was decided in an agreement between the club and the family not to file a lawsuit with the Dutch federation.
The Dutchman suffered a cardiac arrest during a friendly in 2017. Investigations into the incident point out that there was a lot of time spent to unblock the athlete’s airway and delay in using the defibrillator. The player suffered permanent brain damage and only in 2020 woke up from a coma.
The Nouri family and Ajax reach a settlement.

In an official club statement, General Manager Van der Sar said: “We all realize that the suffering of Abdelhak and his loved ones is not over. It remains a very sad situation, that’s how we feel here at Ajax too. way the family takes care of Abdelhak day and night with lots of love and attention”.
“When I visit him, I am always welcomed with open arms by the family. This also applies to other Ajax colleagues and we appreciate it very much. The bond between Ajax and the Nouri family is permanent”, said the former goalkeeper.
The tributes for him go beyond the personal field. The best player in the club’s youth categories receives the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy, in addition to having his shirt retired. Only a joint decision by the family and the club can hand over the number 34 to any other player.
