Spanish figure skater Laura Barquero, paired with Marco Zandron, has tested positive for doping during the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. This was reported on the website of the International Testing Agency (ITA).
In a sample of a 20-year-old athlete dated February 18, the banned drug clostebol, which is an anabolic steroid, was detected. In the near future, the case will be transferred to the anti-doping department of the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The skater may request the opening of the “B” sample.
At the Beijing Games, Barquero and Zandron finished 11th in pair skating, becoming the first Spanish pair to compete in this type of competition at the Olympics. This season they also finished ninth at the European Championships in Tallinn.
This is the fourth positive doping test at the 2022 Olympics. Prior to this, banned substances were found in the blood of Iranian skier Hussein Saveh-Shemshaki, Ukrainian skier Valentina Kaminskaya and her compatriot, bobsledder Lydia Gunko. In addition, at the Games it became known about the positive doping test of the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva on December 25, 2021.
