In the presentation of the Mezuena International Cup Egan Bernal, the champion of the Italy spin of 2021 and of Tour de France 2019, indicated that this initiative seeks to “help many more children and bring out more champions, because the country needs it and has a lot of potential.”
“More than a cycling cup, it is a family cup, and the idea is that it grows a lot. I hope to see you out there”, concluded the 25-year-old cyclist in a video message
On January 24, the runner collided at high speed with a bus on the highway that goes from Bogotá to Tunja, near the municipality of Gachancipá, when the vehicle had stoppedimpact that caused fractures in the femur and right knee, in vertebrae and eleven ribs, among other injuries.
Although it was feared that the cyclist’s recovery would be slow and costly, Bernal surprised everyone with videos in rehabilitation in which he even appeared taking his first steps after the accident or pedaling on a stationary bicycle.

The competition presented this Saturday in the town of Chía, on the outskirts of Bogotá, will have three activities: the first to be held on March 17 at the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, another in June also in Chía on the Pan-American track and the last one in August, when the final will be held in the municipality of Cajicá.
“The objective is to promote the sport; that more and more talents come out and the mountain bike can be developed, as well as projecting future stars and future Egan Bernal. There is a lot of talent in Colombia, we are in the task of discovering talents”, specified during the presentation press conference the director of the Mezuena Foundation, Paul Mazuera.
In this sense, the competition seeks to “support children, most of them from low incomes, whose dream is to be cyclists, just as Egan’s dream was,” he said, for his part, Xiomara Guerrerofrom the Egan Bernal Foundation.
Although Bernal was not finally at the presentation event, the one who did attend was his teammate BRandy Riverawho suffered a fall at the end of January for which he had to be hospitalized.
