The presentation of Valieva for the state award became known on February 18. According to the chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, Dmitry Svishchev, the question of what kind of award the skater will receive is under development.
Valieva placed fourth in the individual figure skaters’ tournament at the Beijing Olympics and won gold with Russia in the team event. The Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed the skater to participate in the Games after a doping scandal. Trimetazidine, a banned substance, was found in her sample.
