The new date for the 2022 World Youth Ice Hockey Championship, postponed due to outbreaks of coronavirus in several teams, has become known. The words of the President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Luc Tardif are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“The 2022 Men’s Youth World Championships will be held in mid-August in Alberta, Canada. These will be completely new competitions, we are resetting all the results of already played matches, ”said Tardif. He noted that the decision to cancel the tournament in December was the right one.
Tardif also spoke about the changes in the format that will occur after the tournament in 2022. “One team will still fly out, in Novosibirsk and Omsk there will not be 11 teams at the 2023 Youth World Championships,” he said.
The cancellation of the MFM-2022 became known on December 29. In the Russian team, two players were infected with COVID-19, among them was 17-year-old Matvey Michkov. Hockey players were sent to quarantine.
Before the cancellation of the championship, it was reported that the match between the national teams of Russia and Slovakia was cancelled. The Russian team was awarded a forfeit defeat with a score of 0:1. Teams from the United States and the Czech Republic, where cases of coronavirus were detected, were also awarded technical defeats.
