The Gremio de Porto Alegre, which this season will play in the second division of Brazilian soccer, fired coach Vagner Mancini on Monday amid continuous pressure from the fans for a game they consider deficient.
“The club thanks the professional for his dedication in his second time in command of the team and wishes him success in his career as a coach,” said the ‘tricolor gaúcho’ in a statement.
Mancini, 55, was screwed up by the ‘torcedores’ who attended Gremio’s 1-1 draw with Juventude on Sunday in Porto Alegre for the sixth date of the Gaúcho Championship, the Rio Grande do Sul state championship that is played before the start of the leagues.
Although Gremio is first and undefeated in that tournament (four wins, two draws), its performance has not been to the liking of the fans, already hurt by relegation to Serie B last season.
Mancini took over last October, when the team was already compromised in the standings, after a series of setbacks for Tiago Nunes and Luiz Felipe Scolari on the bench.
Once the relegation was finalized, the third in the successful history of one of the main Brazilian squads, the board decided to give continuity to their project.
After the decline in category, the majority of renowned players from the Guild left the team, either due to contract termination or common agreement to lower costs.
Former Brazilian internationals like Rafinha or Douglas Costa and the Colombian Miguel Ángel Borja left, leaving the responsibility of promoting a team that mixes young talents like the coffee grower Jaminton Campaz or the Paraguayan Mathías Villasanti with experienced players like Diego Souza. Gremio will start to dispute the second division championship in April. (D)
