Orense SC falls to Newell’s Old Boys and is eliminated from the Copa Libertadores sub-20

Despite having started with good performances and results, Orense Sporting Club was eliminated from the Copa Libertadores sub-20 after losing 3-1 against Argentine Newell’s Old Boys on Sunday.

The gauchos billed through Joaquín Messi (26 minutes), Genaro Rossi (77 minutes) and Julián Contrera (84 minutes). The Machaleño cast lowered the score with a goal from Erick Plúas (72 minutes). With this result, Orense ranked third in group C with six points, the same as Guaraní and Newell’s, but with a smaller goal difference (+0 against +2 from Newell’s and +3 from Guaraní).

The Chilean team Universidad de Concepción was in last place, after not having lost the three games that were played.

Independiente del Valle, defending champion, Guaraní, Peñarol and Caracas will play the semifinals of the youth tournament. The winners of Thursday’s matches will play for the title on February 20.

The scorers at the end of the group stage are Óscar José Cruz (Peñarol) and Saúl Guarirapa (Caracas), with three goals each.

The U-20 Libertadores Cup, which celebrates its fifth edition this year, has been won by Universitario de Deportes in 2011, River Plate in 2012, Sao Paulo in 2016, Nacional in 2018 and Independiente in 2020. (D)
