The court panel of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) explained the decision to remove the temporary suspension from the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
The CAS said that the decision in favor of the 15-year-old athlete was made taking into account her status as a “protected person” and a special approach to her. It is noted that the later notification of a positive doping test received in December 2021 spoke in favor of Valieva. The court emphasized that this indicates the presence of serious problems. In their opinion, the non-admission of the skater to the Olympic Games would cause her irreparable harm.
The removal of the temporary suspension from the Russian figure skater became known earlier on February 14. It was reported that CAS did not uphold the appeals of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Skating Union (ISU) in the Valieva case. The Russian figure skater was allowed to participate in the individual tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Valieva’s questionable doping test was reported on 9 February. In this regard, the IOC has postponed the award ceremony following the results of the team tournament of the Olympics. The Russian team, which included Valieva, became the winner in this type of program.
