The Washington Post journalist Sally Jenkins supported Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva amid the doping scandal at the Beijing Olympics. Her words are available on the publication’s website.
“The testing system is to blame – and there is no reason to punish Camila,” Jenkins said. She called the Russian woman the greatest figure skater of our time, who towers over everyone. The journalist noted that there is no substance that would explain Valieva’s artistry, except for the true inspiration with which she skates.
According to Jenkins, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have drowned Valieva in a series of uncertainties with a multi-level suspension process. The American accused WADA of inefficiency and said that it would be absolute recklessness to punish the skater, indicating the politicization and depravity of the global anti-doping system.
On February 11, the International Testing Agency officially confirmed that Valieva’s December 25 doping test tested positive for the banned trimetazidine. After that, the IOC and WADA filed an appeal with the CAS against the decision to lift the temporary suspension from the 2022 Olympic Games Valieva. The figure skater’s case will be considered on February 13.
Valieva’s questionable doping test was reported on 9 February. In this regard, the IOC has postponed the award ceremony following the results of the team tournament of the Olympics. The Russian team, which included Valieva, became the winner in this type of program.
