Viner-Usmanova compared doping scandals around Valieva and Kabaeva

President of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Viner-Usmanova compared the doping scandals around figure skater Kamila Valieva and gymnast Alina Kabaeva. She is quoted by TASS.

According to Viner-Usmanova, the scandal with Valieva is similar to the situation with the removal of the Olympic champion Kabaeva in 2001. “Kabaeva had the same thing, she performed at the Goodwill Games at her age. She drank supplements to lose weight, there was furosemide, three months later there was a world championship, she became a champion, and only then the data was published that she had a banned drug, she was removed for two years, ”the coach recalled. As a result, the gymnast was deprived of the awards received at these tournaments.

Viner-Usmanova called it egregious the fact that Valieva was informed of a positive doping test, passed in December, only at the Olympics. The coach also stated that she predicted a similar situation at the Games. “It happened like I said. We were chosen at the Summer Games because it was necessary for Great Britain to bypass Russia, now Camila is the most beautiful thing we have in winter sports, ”she shared.

Earlier on February 11, the International Testing Agency (ITA) stated that Valieva’s December 25 doping test tested positive for the banned drug trimetazidine. After that, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decision of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) to lift the temporary suspension of Valieva from the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
