British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua will have a rematch with Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk. This was reported to the BBC by the athlete’s promoter Eddie Hearn.
“It is clear that Joshua will fight Usyk, which is his preferred option. You will see this fight in May,” Hearn said. He noted that various venues are being considered for the fight from America to the Middle East, but preference is given to the UK.
Hearn added that negotiations on the issue of not fighting have stalled. Joshua has decided not to accept the release offered by world champion Tyson Fury.
Earlier it was reported that Joshua may refuse to fight Usyk. According to The Telegraph, the athlete agreed not to fight for a release of 15 million pounds (17.9 million euros). In this case, Usyk will be able to fight Fury for the title of absolute heavyweight boxing world champion.
The victory over Joshua by unanimous decision last year allowed Usyk to become the world champion in four prestigious versions: the World Boxing Association (WBA), the International Boxing Federation (IBF), the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the International Boxing Organization (IBO). The fight took place on 25 September. In the contract for the duel, a clause on revenge was spelled out.
For the title of absolute world champion, the Ukrainian lacks one belt – according to the World Boxing Council (WBC). Fury currently holds the title.
