Olympic champion explained Bolshunov’s decision to withdraw from the Olympics sprint

Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Alexander Legkov commented on the withdrawal of Russian skier Alexander Bolshunov from the sprint at the 2022 Games in Beijing. His words are quoted by Sport-Express.

Legkov said that Bolshunov spent a lot of energy on winning the skiathlon, which is why he needs recovery. “Visually it seemed that it was all easy to win, but in fact a lot of effort is wasted. Most likely, they set priorities, this is their decision. Let’s hope that everything is correct,” he stressed.

The decision of Bolshunov not to participate in the sprint was previously announced by the head coach of the Russian national team Yuri Borodavko. It was noted that the athlete himself wanted to refuse to participate in the race, since the skiathlon, which took place at high altitude, was difficult for him.

Bolshunov won the skiathlon on 6 February. This Olympic gold was the first in his career for a Russian.

The Russian national team in the sprint will be represented by Alexander Terentiev, Sergey Ustyugov and Artem Maltsev. The race will take place later than February 8th.
