The American company Facebook has asked the Solntsevsky District Court of Moscow not to consider the claim of the former Russian national team player Dmitry Khokhlov because of the interpretation of his last name. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
Facebook filed a motion to dismiss the case due to the lack of jurisdiction of the Solntsevsky court. According to representatives of the company, the case should be considered in another court. “I will fight for my name. As I understand it, they have the algorithms written down, the moderators are in Ukraine, they believe that the name Khokhlov is a hostile statement against their people, ”said the ex-athlete.
Khokhlov filed a lawsuit against Facebook last September. He was dissatisfied with the fact that the company treats his last name as a derogatory name for Ukrainians, and as a result, he cannot fully use either Instagram or Facebook because of this. He demanded to change the algorithms of social networks, and also intended to receive compensation for non-pecuniary damage.
Khokhol is a derogatory or insulting, sometimes joking nickname for Ukrainians. The meaning of “Ukrainian”, “Little Russian” for the term “Khohol” is also recorded in Dahl’s Explanatory Dictionary.
Since 2015, Facebook has been actively blocking the accounts of Russian-speaking users who use the word “khokhol” in their posts. The administration of the social network came to the conclusion that it is not politically correct.
