Wayne Rooney confesses that he took refuge in alcohol to assimilate his fame when he dazzled as a striker in the Premier League

At this point it is clear that Wayne Rooney (36 years old) is immersed in controversy. The former player and current manager of Derby County never hid that he went through difficult moments throughout his life, but perhaps he was never as sincere as in the interview published this Sunday by the newspaper Daily Mail and reply ACE from Spain.

Rooney, who debuted as a professional at the age of 16, acknowledged that he had problems dealing with fame and that he took refuge in alcohol.

“I locked myself up and drank. Locking myself up made me forget some of the issues I was dealing with. It was like a binge, ”says Rooney about the beginnings of his career.

“I had a couple of days off and I didn’t want to be around anyone. I would sit at home and for two days, just drink. He was in a really bad situation, ”adds the Derby Country coach, who confesses that he went to training trying to hide “with drops in his eyes” his condition.

On the causes that led to this behavior, the former soccer player lists several. “It was a buildup of everything: the pressure of playing for your country, playing for Manchester United, the pressure of some of the things that came up about my personal life… trying to deal with all that built-up pressure,” explains Rooney, that he never shared his situation with anyone.

“Now, people are more able to talk about that kind of thing. Back then, you just didn’t talk about it. I never spoke to Alex Ferguson or any of my Manchester United teammates,” he reveals.

His problems with alcohol also took their toll on his relationship with Coleen, his current wife. “I made silly mistakes because I was having a kind of ‘explosion’. Coleen forgave me, but my behavior was unacceptable, ”shares Rooney, who will star in an Amazon documentary in which she shows herself as she really is.

“I’ve always had an image that I knew wasn’t me, but I’ve earned that reputation from the things I’ve done. But I am different. It was nice to get a few things off my chest. It’s almost like talking to a therapist, ”concludes the former player about his experience with the documentary. (D)
